  • Departmental Profile

    The Govt. Degree College for Women, Baramulla was established in 1986 in the premises of Govt. Girls Higher. Secondary. School, Baramulla with two Rooms having a Library, Principal Room & Establishment Section. But latter on two buildings were constructed by Higher Education Department on the land of Girls Higher. Secondary. School and Library was shifted in other building till the number of books were increased. When the number of students increased the importance of Library became much more in demand, in terms of infrastructure and academic excellence. In 1998 the library was shifted to pre-fabricated building where it was functioning till December 2008. Meanwhile the college purchased the land with two buildings. Keeping in view, the number of students and improvisation of faculties it became necessary that some separate building should be allotted as a library block to the college. In the present date Library has its own/separate Building with spacious textbook, reference, reading hall, browsing Center etc.

    The Library of the college is automated using SOUL 2.0 ILMS. Barcode based circulation of books is being practiced. The Library follows the open access book browsing system.

  • Library Sections/Facilities.
    • Textbook sections: Library has two separate text book sections viz Arts and science. Rich collection of about 20,000+ books related to the courses taught in the college are available in both sections. Users can browse through the open books racks and can also take help from the secion Incharge in locating their relevant books.
    • Reference Section:Encyclopedia, Dictionaries, competitive exam books and books on Kashmir Literature and other subjects are available in the section. About 7000+ books are housed are in the section.
    • (Online Public Access Catalogue) :The College Library is enriched with the OPAC Facility whereby Faculty, Staff and students can search for the books available in the Library via different approaches like subject, Title, Author etc.
    • Bank Facility: The Library provides the Book Bank facility. The undergraduate students belonging to the under privileged sections of the society avail benefit from such facility. Under this facility 2/3 books are issued to the students till completion of whole semester. The Book bank facility was initiated in the year 2016.
    • Room facility: The Library has a spacious reading room. Various Newspapers in different languages are subscribed to benefit faculty, staff and students of the college. Magazines pertaining to various fields like Current affairs, General Knowledge, Science, Technology and other fields are procured to keep the beneficiaries abreast with the latest knowledge and happenings around the world.
    • Browsing Center: The library has a well developed Browsing centre with LAN and Internet facility.
    • Reprographic service/ Photocopy service: Reference material, magazine articles etc that are not lent out, are photocopied at nominal charges at the Library.
    • Information Desk/Property Counter: Users keep their belongings at property counter and mark their attendance in the Visitor’s Register.
    • Library Meeting/Seminar/Conference Hall The Library has a spacious hall in the ground floor. The hall provides oppurtunities to conduct library orientation/awareness programs and conduct of other events.
    • New Arrival displays: The books/new arrivals are conveyed to the faculty and students via display of books jackets at the new arrival board.

The college library subscribes e-resources under NLIST programme, An initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) under the NME-ICT now funded by UGC, as college component under e-ShodhSindu consortium thereby providing access to the quality educational resources comprising of e-journals, e-books.

The College Library has also made institutional registration to the service of National Digital Library of India, whereby digital content in the form of e-books are provided free of cost providing benefit to both the faculty and students of the college with remote access option.

Library Rules

The Library is a place of study and research. It demands clean and tranquil atmosphere, which is strictly being maintained in this library. Cooperation from users will add to this atmosphere, therefore, users are advised to adhere strictly to the following instructions

  • Smoking, Chatting and making noise, eatables are strictly prohibited inside the Library.
  • Mobile Phones should be switched off or put in silent mode within library premises.
  • Personal/private books, bags are not allowed inside the library. These are to be kept outside at the property/belongings counter.
  • Library does not accept any responsibility for the loss or damage to the personal belongings left in the premises.
  • Tearing off, marking and mutilation of pages is strictly prohibited
  • Users are requested to keep their Identity Cards always with them for issue/return and entering into the Library perimises.
